This is an ode to the father of fractal geometry, Benoit Mandelbrot. I used the famous formula that bears his name, the Mandelbrot set, to create the pattern. In order for the halftone to be effective, I used gradient domain processing to normalize the gradient of the smoothed iteration count of the exterior of the set. I processed the resulting data with a custom algorithm to halftone an image of him that I drew by hand. I chose a zoom location that was dense with pattern, showing many different phenomena common to the set, including minibrots, embedded Julia medallions, and more.
Once I had my custom rendered pattern from the Mandelbrot set, I passed an original grayscale digital painting I did of the man himself through my custom halftone software to produce a black and white master. From this digital master I created a single edition laser engraving that is engraved into opaque white acrylic and infilled with paint.
This is framed in an ornate oval frame like a classic old timey photo. Because the Mandelbrot set is related to a circle the price is a thousand times 2*pi.
